Family of Sindi Hawkins in favour of VGH housing project

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The family of a former Kelowna MLA who lost her fight against leukemia last year is praising a new affordable housing project near VGH.

Sindi Hawkins’ sister, Rupie Sachdeva, is welcoming the news. The program gives cancer patients and their caregivers an apartment for just $600 a month while they’re getting treatment.

“Who can leave their job and come and be with their wife or child for a long period of tine? Someone has to be at home to keep the family going,” she explains. “Even if you have friends who are able to come, there’s only so long that [they can] come and stay in a hotel.”

Sachdeva says Sindi sometimes spent up to six months away from home. “She was diagnosed in January, she had a transplant in March, and she had to stay for a hundred days after for her follow-up treatments. So, they were long, long periods of time.”

Sachdeva says it cost $1,800 a month to pay for an apartment near VGH, while her sister underwent treatments. She says most families can’t afford it.
