VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – On the same day a branch of the B.C. Cancer Agency was named after her, former B.C. Liberal cabinet minister Sindi Hawkins has died after a high-profile battle with leukemia.
Hawkins died at noon in Calgary with her family by her side. She was 52 years old.
She served three terms after first being elected in 1996 as a member of the Liberal Opposition. She held the Minister of Health Planning, Minister of State for Intergovernmental Affairs and Deputy Speaker of the Legislature portfolios.
Hawkins was diagnosed with leukemia in 2004 and turned her battle against cancer into a public campaign to raise awareness for treatment and prevention.
