VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Affordable housing options are now available for patients near VGH to lessen the financial burden on families with loved ones, needing leukemia treatments or organ transplants.
One-bedroom apartments will only cost about $20 a day or $600 a month, and a donation from Diana Krall’s foundation is helping to make this possible. Her sister Michelle Krall Wigmore says this is something that could have benefited her family when their mother Adella had challenges getting from Naniamo to Vancouver General.
“She couldn’t stay in units that were already existed because bone-marrow transplant recipients have unique needs,” says Krall Wigmore. “Their immune systems are compromised and being around somebody even with a cold can be dangerous. We needed it for four months, and we were fortunate to find something close to the hospital, but it was so expensive.”
This is still a pilot project, which is expected to benefit up to 120 families over the next year.
